Mosquitoes are a prevalent issue in Aruba, especially during the wet season which typically runs from October to January. The warm and humid climate of the island provides the perfect breeding ground for these pesky insects. Mosquito bites can not only be annoying and itchy, but they can also pose a serious health risk due to the potential transmission of mosquito-borne diseases.
In Aruba, one of the most concerning mosquito-borne diseases is dengue fever. Dengue fever is caused by a virus transmitted by the Aedes mosquito species. Symptoms of dengue fever can range from mild to severe, and in some cases, it can be life-threatening. Other mosquito-borne diseases that are a concern in Aruba include Zika virus and chikungunya.
To combat the mosquito population and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, the government of Aruba has implemented various mosquito control measures. These measures include larviciding, fogging, and public education campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of preventing mosquito breeding sites. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and use mosquito nets to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
